I’ve finally upgraded to the Sony A7S III for my video work, but the internal audio just isn't cutting it. I'm looking for a high-quality shotgun or wireless mic under $400 that takes advantage of the digital hot shoe. What are your top recommendations for getting crisp audio during run-and-gun shoots?
Totally agree with the above recommendations! The digital shoe on the A7S III is literally a life saver cuz it avoids all that cable mess and basically bypasses the noisy internal preamps. If you're trying to keep the budget tight, you should definately check out the Sony ECM-G1 Shotgun Microphone. It’s super affordable—usually around $150—and it’s tiny, which is great for run-and-gun setups where weight matters. I’ve tried it and honestly, for the price, the audio is way better than internal, right? I mean, the B10 mentioned earlier is amazing, but if you can find a deal or go used, the Sony ECM-B1M Digital Shotgun Microphone is the bigger version with more pickup patterns. Also, for wireless, since you're looking at under $400, the Sony ECM-W2BT Wireless Microphone is still the most cost-effective way to stay in that digital ecosystem without breaking the bank. Just make sure the digital switch is on! gl with the shoot!
I get it. I recommend Sony ECM-B10 Compact Shotgun Microphone for its 24-bit digital signal processing or the Sony ECM-W2BT Wireless Microphone for wireless flexibility. Both are great options.
Respectfully, I'd consider another option. Ngl those tiny mics feel flimsy... iirc a used Sony XLR-K3M Dual-Channel Digital XLR Adaptor Kit with Shotgun Microphone is way safer and more reliable for pro work.
Honestly the A7S III is such a beast but that digital shoe is a game changer for keeping things clean. I actually spent a whole weekend trying to DIY my own shock mount for an old mic using rubber bands and some PVC pipe because I just hate cable clutter and wanted to see if I could save a few bucks. It actually worked okay until I tried to use it while filming my cousins garage band in their basement. The basement had these crazy high ceilings so I ended up spending like four hours trying to staple egg cartons to the walls to kill the echo. My uncle got so mad because I used his heavy duty stapler and ended up hitting a water pipe behind the drywall. We had to shut off the main valve and everything... the shoot was a total disaster but man, those egg cartons actually do nothing for low-end frequencies. anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there.
Solid advice 👍
