I recently purchased the new Canon EOS R8 mirrorless camera and need recommendations on the best memory card to use with it for both photos and videos. The camera has a single UHS-II SD card slot.
I'll primarily be shooting photos but also want to take advantage of the R8's 4K 60p video capabilities. Speed and reliability are important to me. I've been looking at some UHS-II V90 class cards from brands like SanDisk, ProGrade Digital, Sony, and Delkin.
Does anyone have experience using SD cards with the R8? What minimum speed class would you recommend for 4K video? Are there any compatibility issues or cards I should avoid?
Thanks in advance for your memory card suggestions!
I highly recommend the SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-II card. It's a V90 card with read speeds up to 300MB/s and write speeds up to 260MB/s, which is more than enough to handle the R8's 4K video capabilities and fast burst shooting. I've been using this card in my R8 for months without any issues.
I bought Lexar Professional 2000X UHS-II V90 card for EOS R8, works well.
UHS-II V90 sd card is the best choice, if you don't care about price.
Based on actual testing, our recommended memory card for those of you who shoot a lot of continuous bursts with the R8 is the Kingston Canvas React Plus UHS-II.
For burst shooting we would strongly recommended going with one of the faster UHS-II SD cards. But if you don't shoot bursts often then a UHS-I SD card will probably be all you will need. However, even if you don't shoot many bursts you will still benefit from the faster read times of UHS-II cards when copying images to your computer.
Important tip: make sure that it is 64GB or larger in capacity, since these will be SDXC cards. 32GB and lower capacity cards that are labelled SDHC use the FAT32 file system and will split your movies into 4GB chunks.
UHS-II SD cards are recommended for EOS R8.
While V30 SD cards are typically sufficient, they can be slow when transferring data to computers. For improved performance and peace of mind, opt for V60 cards. These offer faster transfer speeds and reliable data integrity. V90 cards are generally unnecessary for most users. V60 cards provide a good balance of speed and reliability without data loss.
