Hey everyone! I’ve been shooting with my Lumix GX85 and the standard 12-32mm kit lens for a few months now. While I love how compact the setup is, I’m really starting to feel the limitations when it comes to low-light performance and getting that creamy background blur I see in so many professional shots. I’ve decided it’s finally time to move beyond the kit lens and invest in some high-quality prime glass.

I’ve been doing a bit of research, but the sheer number of options between Panasonic, Olympus/OM System, and third-party brands like Sigma is a little overwhelming. I’m primarily interested in street photography and taking portraits of my kids, so I’ve been looking at the Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 for its price and the Olympus 45mm f/1.8 for those tight headshots. However, I’ve also heard great things about the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 for wider environmental shots. My budget is around $300-$500 per lens, and I’d really like to keep things relatively small to match the MFT philosophy.

For those of you who have been in the system for a while, which prime lenses do you consider absolute 'must-haves' for a well-rounded kit, and which one should I prioritize first for a mix of street and portrait work?

Oh man, I totally feel u!! I started my MFT journey with the GX85 too, and honestly, the kit lens is great for size but basically sucks when the sun goes down. For ur situation, I would definitely suggest picking up the Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH first because it’s the most versatile focal length for street work! In my experience, here's the best glass to aim for: * Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH: This is literally the best value lens in the system. It's super fast, and that f/1.7 aperture is fantastic for getting that creamy background blur u want. Plus, it's tiny!
* Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f/1.8: Seriously, just buy this for the kids. It’s basically the gold standard for MFT portraits. The 90mm equivalent focal length is amazing for headshots.
* Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Micro Four Thirds: This lens is a beast for low light wide shots, but it’s a bit heavier... idk if it matches the GX85 vibe as well as the others tho. Anyway, I'd prioritize the 25mm cuz it handles everything well. GL!

Ok so ngl if youre looking for long-term reliability and professional-grade performance on the GX85 you need to consider the build quality and AF consistency because some of those budget primes can be a bit hit-or-miss with focus hunting especially in low light so id highly recommend the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH for your street photography since it has a full metal barrel and mount that feels incredibly solid and basically outperforms almost everything in its class when it comes to center-to-edge sharpness and AF speed. For the portrait side of things if you want something that will last you years without the focus mechanism getting wonky i would look at the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary because its optical design is frankly superior to the kit lenses and even many first-party primes with almost zero lateral CA and it has a brass mount with a dust-reduction seal which is a massive plus for keeping your sensor clean and the rendering is just beautiful for those headshots of your kids. Using glass with a dedicated aperture ring and robust weather-sealing components ensures that the lens internal electronics are better protected against the elements compared to standard consumer-grade optics.
