Hey everyone! I’ve been shooting with my Sony Alpha for a few months now using just the kit lens, but I’m really looking to step up my portrait game. I’m craving that creamy background blur and better low-light performance, which my current setup just isn't delivering. Since I’m on a tight budget—ideally staying under $350—I’ve been looking at the Sony 50mm f/1.8 and even some third-party options from brands like Viltrox or Samyang. I’m a bit torn between getting a 50mm or saving a bit more for an 85mm for that tighter look. Does anyone have experience with these or a hidden gem they’d recommend for high-quality portraits? What’s the best bang-for-your-buck prime lens right now?

hey!! oh man, i totally feel u on this. i remember when i first ditched my kit lens like 7 years ago, it literally changed everything for my photography! ok so, basically, the reason ur kit lens feels 'flat' is cuz the aperture is too small (usually f/3.5 or higher). to get that creamy blur, u need a wide aperture like f/1.8, which lets in way more light and shrinks the depth of field. it matters cuz it makes ur subject literally pop off the screen and hides messy backgrounds! > I’m craving that creamy background blur and better low-light performance... here's what i recommend: for a tight budget, the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 is the classic 'nifty fifty.' it’s usually around $198-$240 brand new. it’s a bit noisy and slow to focus sometimes, but the images r amazing for the price! if u want that tighter, professional look, the Viltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 II FE is a serious beast for about $350. its sharp as hell and the bokeh is way smoother than the 50mm imo. another hidden gem is the Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 FE. it’s super tiny and i think? it’s the perfect middle ground if u find 85mm too tight indoors. i love it for travel portraits cuz it dont weigh anything. also, lowkey check used sites for the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8—if u can find one for $350, grab it immediately cuz its the best value portrait lens ever made. anyway, hope that helps! gl! 👍

Quick question—before I give advice, can you clarify if you're using an APS-C or Full-Frame camera? It's literally the most important detail here lol. Honestly, I'm always a bit wary of the 'budget' label because I've had some pretty bad experiences with gear failing me when it matters most. I remember buying a cheap prime years ago and the autofocus was so jittery it ruined a whole portrait session. So disappointing... If you're on Full-Frame, I'd highkey suggest skipping the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 because the AF motor is just not up to professional standards. A much safer, high-quality bet would be the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 if you can find it used, or even the Viltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 II FE. Just be careful with third-party firmware! If you're on APS-C, the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Sony E-mount is the gold standard for safety and sharpness. Lemme know your body model!

Curious about one thing: is your camera APS-C or full-frame?? I found the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 pretty disappointing and slow, so I wanna suggest the right alternative for your specific sensor!

Can confirm this works. Did the same thing on mine and its been solid ever since.

Respectfully, I'd consider another option. BE CAREFUL with those cheap primes because the DC motors hunt like crazy in low light!! Honestly, I've had a pretty disappointing experience with the budget main-brand 50—it's loud and slow. Id skip it and grab a third-party 85mm instead. The focal length compression is just way better for portraits anyway, imo. GL!

hey!! in my experience, u should definitely look at third-party brands instead of the basic brand-name lenses. - go with anything from viltrox or samyang. theyre actually killing it in the budget market right now!!
- honestly, just grab an 85mm from those brands. the bokeh is way better for portraits than any 50mm, you know? over the years i’ve tried many and third-party stuff is basically the best bang-for-your-buck. gl!
