Top external flash recommendations for Sony Alpha series cameras?

Hey everyone! I’ve recently fully committed to the Sony Alpha system with an a7IV, but I’m really struggling to pick the right external flash. I’ve been looking at the native Sony GN60 for that seamless integration, but the price tag is pretty steep. On the other hand, I keep hearing amazing things about Godox options like the V1 or V860III for their value and lithium battery life. I mainly shoot indoor events and some portraits, so having reliable TTL and HSS is a must for me. I'm also curious about recycle times during heavy use. For those using Alpha bodies, what has been your most reliable go-to flash, and is the native Sony gear worth the extra cost?

For your situation, grab the Godox V860III-S Flash for Sony:
- Way cheaper (~$230)
- Amazing battery life
Basically does everything native gear does for half the price. gl!

I realy had issues with third-party mounts frying hotshoes tbh... wierdly unreliable. Before recommending Sony HVL-F46RM External Flash, how fast are your bursts for those events?

In my experience, I used Sony HVL-F60RM2 Wireless Radio Flash, but Godox V1-S Flash for Sony works well and is wayyy faster. Honestly, the battery is a game-changer, dont overpay!!

Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, after years of shooting, the 'native tax' is just harder to justify. I've actually had issues with Sony's build quality lately—super disappointing tbh. Check these for reliable TTL/HSS:
Nissin MG80 Pro Flash for Sony: Built like a tank, handles heat well.
Westcott FJ80 II M Universal Speedlight: Fast recycle times and great UI. Lithium batteries are a literal game-changer for event recycle times. What's your budget looking like? gl!

Honestly, you might want to be super careful with the hotshoe on the a7IV... it is way more fragile than the older dslr mounts. I've seen too many people snap pins by being too rough or using heavy third-party units without support. If you want performance that actually lasts, you might want to consider these:

  • Profoto A10 AirTTL Sony: This is really the gold standard for reliability. The light quality is super consistent and the recycle times wont lag during your main event. It is ridiculously expensive, but if you cant afford a single miss during a wedding or event, it is worth the peace of mind.
  • Godox TT685II-S Flash for Sony: Standard AA batteries make this one a favorite for me over the V series sometimes. Grab some Panasonic Eneloop Pro AA Rechargeable Batteries and you dont have to worry about a proprietary lithium pack failing or swelling mid-shoot. It might be slower than the li-ion stuff but it is very predictable. Just make sure to tighten the lock ring properly every single time you mount it. It sounds like a small thing but it prevents those weird ttl communication errors that happen when the flash wiggles... be careful out there while you are shooting.
