Hey everyone! I’ve been rocking my Sony A7IV with the standard kit lens for a few months now, and while it’s been a great starter, I’m finally ready to dive into the world of prime lenses to really see what this sensor can do. I’m mainly looking for that creamy background bokeh and the superior low-light performance that my current zoom just can't quite reach.
I’ve been doing some research, but I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of E-mount options out there. I’m torn between spending the extra cash on the native Sony G Master series or going with third-party glass like the Sigma Art line or the newer Tamron primes. I mostly find myself shooting street photography and environmental portraits, so I’m leaning towards a 35mm or a 50mm. Weight is definitely a factor for me since I like to keep my setup relatively portable for long walks, but I don't want to sacrifice sharpness or that lightning-fast eye autofocus performance Sony is known for.
Has anyone here compared the Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM against the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN? If you could only pick one prime lens to be your workhorse on a Sony Alpha body, which one would you recommend as the best bang for your buck?
oh man, i feel u... i went through this exact same thing recently with my a7iv!! ngl, i started with the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art cuz the price was way better, but honestly i was kinda disappointed with it. it's seriously heavy for street photography and i had issues with the autofocus hunting sometimes when i was trying to use the eye-af... it just wasnt as snappy as i expected. so basically here's my take: - Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM: basically the king. its sooo light and the autofocus is lightning fast. but yeah, its super expensive... definitely the "buy once cry once" lens tho.
- Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art: gorgeous bokeh, seriously beautiful. but unfortunately the weight made my wrist hurt after long walks and the size is a bit much for lowkey street stuff. if u want the absolute best bang for your buck... i guess i'd say save up for the GM. honestly i regret wasting time on the heavier glass first. hope that helps!! gl!
Respectfully, I'd consider another option before going for the cheaper f/1.8s. For the 'safety' of your professional shots, the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM is literally unbeatable. Third-party glass like the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is great, but the native XD linear motors are way more reliable for fast tracking. You really don't want to risk missed focus on a once-in-a-lifetime portrait! The GM is a fantastic investment. gl!
Just catching up, and seconding the recommendation above. Honestly, weight realy is a killer on long street walks. If you want the best bang for your buck without sacrificing AF performance: 1. Sony FE 35mm f/1.8: Tiny, fast, and way cheaper than the GM.
2. Sony FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA: Incredible sharpness and portability. Basically, f/1.8 gives you 90% of the performance for way less cash. Definately more practical for ur portable setup.
just catching up on this thread and honestly, i totally feel that weight issue... 1. agreed on the third-party stuff—it’s beefy. great glass, but it kinda kills the portability of the setup.
2. technical-wise, the native linear motors are WAY better for burst shooting and that eye AF you want. im sooo satisfied with the native prime; it’s basically instant. what’s your budget looking like?
Would love to know this too
yo, +1 to what was said earlier! basically, i've seen this play out a million times. honestly, if you're looking at the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM vs the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art, you gotta look at it from a long-term market perspective: 1. Resale Value: Native glass like the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM holds its price way better. In a few years, you'll still get a huge chunk of your money back if you trade up. Third-party stuff drops off way faster.
2. Technical Edge: Those XD linear motors in the GM are literally silent and way more reliable for eye AF on your Sony A7IV than the motors in the Sigma. 3. Portability: The GM is actually lighter and better balanced for street walks. The Sigma Art is a beast, but it’s highkey heavy after a few hours lol. Anyway, if you can swing the cash, the GM is the better investment for sure. gl! 👍
